Dustin True named "Diamond in the Rough" recipient

Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2007

Eudora High School senior Dustin True is a recipient of the "Diamond in the Rough" award, sponsored by Hurst Fine Diamonds in Lawrence. The award program was created to honor students who has overcome adversity and shows great promise for future success.

Nominees for the award were recommended by high school staff members. True was nominated for his commitment to academics, but also for his desire to balance school, activities and family. Because his parents are divorced and live in different parts of the state, True chose not to play sports for the first three years of high school so that he could better balance his time between his mother and father.

"Dustin is very athletic," one nominator said, "and has many coaches wanting him to participate in many sports through the years. For his senior year in high school, Dustin's mother agreed, and he is participating in both soccer and track. By participating only one year, he will not receive any special honors or state medals, but Dustin deserves an award for being a loving family member who sacrifices to accommodate a situation he did not create."

In addition to sports, True also is involved in student council and scholars' bowl, SADD, international club, National Honors Society and the principal's senior advisory committee.

"Dustin's academic standing is outstanding," said EHS Principal Dale Sample, "and his attitude is exemplary. He treats all students well and gets great respect, from teachers and students alike, because of this."

True is the son of Cliff True and Cindy Soper.
