Students celebrate Dr. Seuss
Monday, March 3, 2008
Students across the Eudora School District celebrated the Dr. Seuss legacy on Feb. 29 and March 3, in memory of the beloved children's author Theodor Geisel who was born on March 2, 1904.
The Friday activities included the annual partnership between the Eudora-De Soto Technical Education Center and Nottingham Elementary. The culinary arts students prepared a feast of green eggs and ham for the kindergarten students and kicked off the special meal with a reading of the famous book.
"It's a fun event for the high schoolers and the kindergartners," said culinary arts instructor Jason Gray, "and it's a day that everyone looks forward to each year."
West Elementary students were treated to a host of activities to make the day extra special.
- Students in each class decorated their room doors in the theme of favorite Dr. Seuss books
- Teachers dressed as the Cat in the Hat read in the cafeteria during lunch.
- Teachers had center activities, including crafts, games, computer sites and reading, all about Dr. Seuss. Students rotated through each class at their grade level.
- Fifth graders did a compare/contrast activity with Seuss books and wrote essays.
- Students participated all week in a contest to estimate how many animal crackers were in a jar. One student, James Nelson in Mr. Hayden’s room, guessed exactly right—564.
The
festivities were topped off by mystery readers—including
Superintendent of Schools Marty Kobza and West Principal Jan
Irby—who shared a favorite
Seuss book with students. Click here—

In addition to the kindergarten trip for Green Eggs and Ham, Nottingham first graders did a rotation among the different rooms, which featured:
- Reading Cat in the Hat and making the signature red and white hats to wear all day.
- Reading the Alphabet Book and playing alphabet bingo.
- Reading Bartholomew and the Ooblek and making their own "ooblek."
- Reading The Eye Book, playing I Spy and doing a hidden picture page.
