Annual race to benefit EHS cross-country team

Wednesday, July 2, 2008

Eudora's annual Horsethief Run will take place on Saturday, July 12, raising money for the Eudora High School cross-country team. All proceeds of the Horsethief Run support the team's training and travel expenses.

"This is a great race," said head cross country coach Paul Boone. "It's a fun time, and the money goes to a good cause."

The event features a five-kilometer run and a one-mile fun run. After June 25, registration is $25 per person; it includes a race T-shirt and refreshments after the race. Participants in the 5K race will be eligible for age-group awards, as well as overall male and female open and masters prizes.

Both races start and end at the EHS softball and baseball complex, adjacent to Eudora Middle School, and are run on all-grass courses. Spikes or racing flats may be worn.

Race-day registration and packet pick-up before the race will go from 6:15 to 7:15 a.m., and the race will begin at 7:30 a.m. To register in advance, go to www.eudoracrosscountry.com and click on the Active.com button, or send an e-mail to horsethiefrun@gmail.com. A race flier may be downloaded from the eFriday Folder on the Eudora Schools Web site. Race results will be posted shortly after the race and on www.mararunning.org.

The annual Horsethief Run (formerly the CPA Run) is directed by the EHS cross country coaches and parents in honor of the early settlers of Eudora. It was originally run in conjunction with Eudora's CPA Picnic. CPA stands for the Central Protective Agency, a group founded in the early 1900s to deter cattle and horse thieves. A CPA member, in the event of a theft, was obligated to help hunt down the thief and exert justice. As members of the Anti-Horse Theif Association, the CPA helped maintain law and order in early Eudora.

The CPA Picnic is celebrated today with a carnival, golf tournament, games and parade. The 2008 picnic is scheduled for the weekend of July 25-27.
