Church street construction to begin Sept. 29

Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008

Road resurfacing along several blocks of Church Street will begin Monday, Sept. 29, and Eudora Schools leaders are encouraging parents and families to plan accordingly.

"Construction that takes place on a busy street like Church is certainly something that our students' parents should keep in mind when they are putting together transportation arrangements to and from school," said Superintendent of Schools Don Grosdidier. "The most important thing to keep in mind is the safety of students while crews are working to complete the project."

The mill and overlay work, coordinated and primarily funded by Douglas County, will reduce Church to one lane from 10th Street to the north side of Kansas Highway 10. It is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete. Details about the project are available from Douglas County Public Works.

Grosdidier said that district staff members are being asked to arrive before the heaviest traffic begins and encouraged flexibility among parents and others driving students to school.

"Drivers need to keep in mind the safety of kids at all times," he said. "This is not a time to try to rush. Take your time, allow for slow-downs, and try to remember that these inconveniences are temporary."

District officials offer the following advice to those driving students to and from school:

  • Be flexible. Consider taking alternate routes that avoid Church Street. Be patient if shuttle arrival and departure times are slightly different during the construction period.
  • Take advantage of the free student shuttle service if at all possible. Students may walk or carpool to a shuttle station at any of the current school buildings, as well as the Eudora Community Learning Center at 9th and Main. NOTE: A transportation request form is required for all students riding a shuttle bus. This form, as well as the shuttle schedule, are available in any school building or may be downloaded from the Parent tools section of www.eudoraschools.org.
  • Carpool whenever possible. Fewer cars on the road and means less congestion and less waiting for everyone.
  • Allow extra time to travel to and from school. There will be delays in the most heavily traveled roadways in town, but advance planning on your part will reduce stress and help students get to school on time.
  • For safety reasons, students should never walk to school along Church Street. Shuttles are available at Nottingham to transport students to the campuses south of K-10.
