Enrichment field trips suspended

For Eudora students, the rest of the school year will not include field trips to museums, concerts or the state capitol in Topeka. Ongoing reductions in state funding for public education forced the Eudora Board of Education to discontinue enrichment field trips for the remainder of the year.
"While these types of field trips are memorable and fun experiences for students, many of them are supplemental to the curriculum and can be replaced with classroom activities," said Superintendent of Schools Don Grosdidier. "It is disappointing that students will not have these opportunities, but cuts at the state level mean we no longer have the resources for these trips."
Field trips that tie directly to the curriculum and cannot be replaced with in-school activities will be allowed to take place as planned.
The district is currently looking to trim more than $350,000 from the approved 2009-10 budget since more cuts were made to state funding in November 2009. The cost of each field trip averages approximately $1,200, primarily in transportation expenses.
School districts across the state are bracing for further cuts in state aid in the coming year, unless the Kansas legislature identifies new streams of state revenue.
