Special night to help parents teach financial responsibility

Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010

During these uncertain financial times, it is crucial for young people to learn how to make responsible financial decisions in life. Parents, you can play a vital role in ensuring that your kids have positive financial futures.

This fall, American Express, personal finance expert Jean Chatzky, and the Council for Economic Education have teamed up to launch the National Money Night Talk. The talk, set for Thursday, Sept. 16, is an evening reserved for parents to sit down and discuss financial responsibility with their children.

The Kansas Council on Economic Education and NexLearn, LLC are adding to the national event by providing an interactive, easy-to-use resource to parents for use with their kids, especially those in kindergarten through eighth grade. For one night only, on Sept. 16, the Financial Foundations for Kids resource will be available FREE to the public.

FF4Kids is a comprehensive set of computer lessons, featuring episodes introducing students to economic and financial concepts such as budgeting, saving, sources of income, and borrowing. It is a great resource for the talk because it requires minimal preparation, is instantly engaging for students, and provides parents with the flexibility to stop and start the video lessons. It facilitates genuine discussions which enable parents and kids to learn together about sound money choices, no matter the level of prior knowledge.
