What will Safe Schools Healthy Students bring to students, staff and the community?
Our funded Safe Schools Healthy Students Initiative brings our community these resources to help students, family and staff:
- "Youth Projects" have begun to provide opportunities for high school students to propose and fund activities so that students who aren’t involved in the wide variety of sports will have alternative activities to stimulate their creativity and development.
- A district Family Resource Center is now open where parents can access books, DVDs and other resources, obtain information about services, and attend workshops and other opportunities.
- A Community Coalition has been established to help support and provide feedback about the many activities and programming of the initiative.
- A stakeholder group has been convened to help define district priorities for social-emotional development and learning at each developmental level.
- Three (3) licensed mental health clinicians have been added to our district: one at the high school, one at the middle school, and one at the elementary school. These “WRAP” staff will provide free services in the schools, including early assessment, intervention, intensive supports, crisis intervention, referral to outpatient services, as well as the consultation and ‘coaching’ that our staff have requested in focus groups.
- One (1) full-time outpatient clinician has been added to be based in the Eudora community for a full range of paid mental health services to children and adults in the community.
- One (1) prevention specialist will provide evidence-based curriculum for our students, and for families through a “Parent University” format; implement an evidence-based social norms campaign; work with appropriate curriculum areas to integrate ATOD prevention learning; create a Parent Support Network; help create environmental changes.
- A certified substance abuse counselor has been added 1 day per week to provide an array of free outpatient services on-site in the district: clinical assessment, therapeutic interventions for individuals, groups, and family; consultation and education; and interdisciplinary team staffing. The counselor will facilitate referrals to WRAP or more intensive outpatient services when needed.
- SSHS will add after-school and other non-school hour programming for elementary and middle school students in October 2009
