For parents & students: Early childhood programs

PEP class

Early childhood programs

Eudora Schools offers programs for children, beginning at birth!

Parents as Teachers
Parents as Teachers is a national program for children age birth to three, that equips parents with the tools they need to tap into their child's natural ability to learn. Participants in PAT enjoy regular play groups and activities, as well as one-on-one home visits for a truly individualized focus on the child's stages of development. The program also includes basic vision, hearing, and developmental screenings at the different critical stages. For more information about becoming involved in the Eudora Parents as Teachers program, parents may call 785-542-4910. There is no charge for participation.

PEP: Preschool Enhancement Program
PEP is an early childhood special education program designed to meet the needs of children ages three to six with delays in one or more of the following areas: cognition, speech/language, motor skills, social skills, and/or self-care skills. The program also has typically developing peers who serve as models demonstrating age-appropriate skills and behaviors.

Developmental screenings
This is an opportunity to see where your child’s skills are in comparison to other children his/her age.
Participating in the screening is not an indication that there are serious concerns; rather it is that more information may be needed. At the screening, children are asked to perform tasks that measure development of:

  • Cognition (matching, counting, and problem solving)
  • Speech and language (how they understand and use language)
  • Motor skills (writing, balance, and coordination)

In addition, your child’s social interactions will be observed, and the school nurse will perform a vision and hearing screening. Results are available at the screening, so you will leave knowing that either your child has passed, or that further evaluation is recommended. Returning for an evaluation does not mean that your child has significant delays, rather that more information is still needed. The evaluation is a much more in-depth assessment of your child’s skills to determine if he/she has a delay and if early childhood special education services are needed.

Parental consent is required in order for a child to be screened. The permission form can be downloaded here.

For more information about PEP, or to schedule a screening appointment, call Nottingham Elementary at 785-542-4920.
