• Enrolling in preschool

If your child was not attending preschool at the end of the school year in May, he or she will need to attend a monthly screening. Please call 785-542-4920 to find out when the next screening dates are scheduled and complete the new student pre-enrollment form. (There will be two days of screenings prior to the start of school.)

Students age 3 or 4 who were attending preschool in May 2020 are already pre-registered for preschool in the fall. Watch for information about online enrollment in July and early August to complete your student's preschool registration. If you wish to use the extended care option, you must apply for a slot. See the information at the bottom of this page for details.

    Location

All of our preschool classrooms are located at West Resource Center, 1310 Winchester Road.

    Fee structure

All students will pay a $60 instructional supply fee, as well as a $5 student insurance fee and a $5 technology usage fee. Students qualifying for free/reduced lunch may receive support for the instructional supply fee. In addition, preschool students who enroll as peer models will be charged a monthly preschool fee of $70. The monthly fee does not apply to those students who are on a special education plan and/or qualify for at-risk status. Click here to view the district fee schedule, with additional information.

    Schedule

In order to better serve your students and meet a state guideline, our preschool hours and days have been adjusted. Preschool will begin on Monday, Aug. 20th and will be in session at these times:

    • Morning: 7:30 a.m.-10:40 a.m. (includes breakfast beginning at 7:30am).  The morning session will be held Monday through Friday.
    • Afternoon: 11:30-2:40 p.m. (includes lunch beginning at 11:30am).  The afternoon session will be held Monday through Thursday.

Your student’s assignment to the morning or afternoon session is determined by age.  Children who will be attending kindergarten the following school year will be assigned to the morning session and will attend preschool Monday through Friday.  Younger students who will not be transitioning to kindergarten the following year will be attending the afternoon session and will attend Monday through Thursday.  This increased instructional time for older students will allow staff to provide more developmentally appropriate lessons and better prepare students for the transition to kindergarten.

    Meals

Depending on whether your child is in the morning or afternoon session, he/she will have time to eat breakfast or lunch as part of the preschool curriculum. Your child will have the choice to purchase a meal from the cafeteria at West using their lunch account or bring a meal (or snack) from home each day. We will provide more information about depositing in your child’s account in August.

    District calendar

The district calendar includes regular early release days (second Wednesday of each month), as well as teacher in-service days and teacher workdays. Preschool will not be in session when school is not in session.  To plan ahead for your student's care, click here to view the updated annual district calendar.

    Extended care option

Families wishing to have a full-day experience (including the morning or afternoon preschool program) may request extended care at an additional cost of $210 per month.  This monthly fee is not eligible for any fee assistance waivers. The hours available for extended care are Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will have both breakfast and lunch and will be led in age-appropriate activities by district instructional staff members. Extended care is NOT available on Friday.

At this time, the extended care option is not able to take DCF childcare payments.

    Applying for extended care

Extended care slots are limited; here’s how you can request a slot for your child:

    1. Complete this application form.
    2. You will be notified whether you received a slot, or not, within five to seven business days.
    3. If you are notified that you received a slot, you will need to confirm and reserve it with a non-refundable payment of $210. This will count for your first month's extended care payment.  Your child does not have a confirmed spot in the program until this fee has been paid.  If payment is not made within seven business days, your child's slot will be forfeited.
