Remote Schedules & AimsWEB Testing

Dear EMS Families,

Thank you for your patience and understanding this week as we navigated the new Hybrid schedule.  We are so proud of what all of our students accomplished all week.  It is not easy for them to adapt to big changes and they really stepped up to the challenge.  In this email I want to go over some changes that will be made to our remote schedule, some in-person schedules, and our AimsWeb testing that all students will be completing next week.

As you know this process has been challenging and stressful for all of us.  We are constantly evaluating and brainstorming how we can make school better for all of our students.  A big change that we are making for our remote families is providing more connection with our remote students and their core teachers.  This process is a big change to their schedule so it is taking some time to put it all together.  We are only able to take care of one class at a time.  All remote students will be assigned a remote “core” class that they will be able to have all focus from their teachers for those class periods.  Those core classes consist of ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science.  Those teachers will be in contact with you on what those changes look like for their classes.

In order to make this work we did have to move around some of our in-person students schedules as well.  Starting on Monday, 7th grade remote schedules and a few in-person schedules will be changed.  We will meet with the in-person students next week to go over what their changes are as well.  7th grade students that are in Group B please check PowerSchool Monday morning to see if your schedule did change.  Teachers will also be in contact with you very soon.

For the other grade levels we will be working through these changes next week.  Once we have everything done we will communicate those changes to you.  We know change is not easy but this is one that needs to happen for our Remote students.  It will allow for more intentional interaction for remote students and our in-person as well for their core class periods.

AIMS Web Testing

Part of the district’s strategic plan is a belief  in “whole child” education, which ensures your child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. This belief is supported through the practice of MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support) and encompasses three tiers or layers of instruction/support. This includes the following components: academic, behavioral, and social-emotional skills.

In order to determine the proper level of academic support, a screener called AIMS is given three times per year. As you are well aware, education looks a little different this year depending on your student’s “type of learning” (remote, in-person, hybrid).  No matter the learning plan, the Eudora School District would still like to screen all students and accommodate families.

The AIMS screener is for both reading and math and it includes the following subtests:

  • Reading (vocabulary, silent reading fluency, reading comprehension, and oral reading fluency)
  • Math (concepts and applications, number comparison fluency, and mental computation fluency)

All parts of the test, with the exception of the oral reading fluency, is performed on the computer through an application called TestNav. Students cannot be signed into their Chromebooks, but simply accessing the TestNav icon in the lower left corner of their computer screen.

Most importantly, please know this is only a screener, which allows your student’s reading and math teacher to determine what best instructional practices are needed. We ask to allow your student to perform the test without any aid and be rest assured that it is NOT for a grade.

Your student’s teacher will communicate with your son/daughter how screening will look in a remote setting.

Thank you to all of you for partnering with us during this time.  We want to make sure we are doing the best we can for every student.  I am so proud of our students, staff and parents for doing this all TOGETHER!!  Have a great weekend!

Thank you,

Jeremy Thomas, EMS Principal
